Ground Plum (Astragalus crassicarpus) is a perennial plant native to North America. This low-growing species reaches a height of about 1-2 feet, forming dense mounds with a spread of up to 3 feet. Its common names include Ground Plum, Buffalo Plum, and Buffalo Pea. Astragalus crassicarpus seeds develop into small, plum-like fruits that contain a single seed. The plant features silvery-green foliage and produces delicate pink to purplish flowers in early summer, attracting pollinators. It thrives in dry to medium soil and is commonly found in prairies, meadows, and open woodlands. Ground Plum is hardy in USDA zones 3-9.

To germinate Astragalus crassicarpus, soak the seeds overnight in room temperature water. Sow the seeds in well-draining soil, cover lightly with a thin layer of soil, and place in a warm location with indirect sunlight. Keep soil moist.
